Custom knives FAQs

What is Damascus steel?

Damascus steel is a hot-forged steel used in Middle Eastern swordmaking from about 1100 to 1700. Damascus swords were of legendary sharpness. The general term "Damascus" refers to metal with a visible grain pattern, sometimes with a texture. Modern Damascus is a lamination of folded steels selected with cosmetic qualities, with grinding and polishing specifically to expose the layers. After a Damascus blade is finished, the surface of the Damascus steel is treated with acid or blued to reveal the grain pattern of the steel layering process. Creating Damascus steel has become its own form of cutlery art.

Normal Care

Keep your knife dry - the entire knife, not just the blade
Keep your knife clean, particularly moving parts and locking device
Keep your knife oiled, especially pivot point the blade.
Do not attempt self-repar.  This could void the knifemaker's warranty.

What is a Liner Lock?

The liner lock and it's derivative, the frame lock is probably the most prevalent locking system used today in tactical knives and was invented in 1980 by Michael Walker. Michael Walker patented the idea, using a ball detent to hold the knife in the closed position and stop pin to hold the knife in the open position.

A liner lock, sometimes called a locking liner, works by having a section of the liner spring inwards and wedge itself beneath the tang of the blade when it is opened all the way. The locks the blade open between the stop pin and the liner locking mechanism. Modified versions of the liner lock may not use a traditional stop pin but use thumbstuds to do the same job instead.

The liner lock is by far the most common locking system used by custom knifemaker's as it is easy to manufacture and reliable to use. The biggest advantage of the liner lock over many other lock types like the lock back, compression lock or axis lock is the easy of one-handed closing in addition to opening. Most other locking methods are not as easy to close one-handed.

Can I Store My Knife in the Sheath?

Never, ever store your knife in the sheath whether it be a leather, Kydex or any other material.  Stainless Steel can corrode and the knife balde needs to breathe and stay dry.
